So whats the big deal about this regional track with an average handle < $200,000 ?
Simply put, You can make money betting it. It takes some record keeping, targetting specific set-ups and a sensible wagering plan but it’s DOABLE.
FRD Pros & Cons
The weather is both a Pro & a Con. The 110 day season now spans all four Canadian Pacific Seasons. If you figure your own track variants and evaluate performances in light of the actual weather & track conditions you are Way Ahead of the crowd. Black symbols printed on a white page won’t reveal that a race was run in knarly snow squall on a surface that grew progressively slower thru out the card.
Having no Race Circuit is a Positive. The Pacific Coastal Mountain Range (The Mountain)to the East and the International Border to the South act as barriers to outside competition. During a meet maybe 20 “gypsies” show up. I’m not privy to the forces that steer the track’s parochial policies but opportunities seem to strongly favor locals. For a punter this means that you only have to intimately “understand” one track & it’s culture.
In a “closed circuit” it’s more of a controlled experiment. The purse structure & race conditions are deciferable. You appreciate where horses “fit in” the spectrum of competition. You may be able to anticipate what a change of driver, post position, appearance, equiptment, class level (implicit or implied), etc will mean.
The low level of parimutuel competion is another positive. A “Pro Gambler” won’t place a major wager into a $4000 exacta pool; the odds would self destruct and the bet would draw unwanted attention.
The relativly rich, slot suplemented purses are worthy of competing for. Therefore the race participants play it pretty straight and would be super-dumb to risk being barred from this Game.
Most of the handicapping sharpies have been lured away by the similcast glitz; either chasing huge carry-over pools or wagering on competitive, headline events at the BIG tracks. And they’re welcome to it; those races are way too tough for me to pick. What the heck do I know about tracks & horses on the other coast or the side of the globe?
Finally, at FRD all the tools are on-line & FREE.
Programs, video: live & replays, results, charts, stats; It’s all a freebie.
The track “brought me back” with this generosity. I don’t have to dedicate time for travelling or witnessing live racing. I can watch, record, evaluate, and wager (and cash) while still in my flannel pajamas.
I love it ; }

Hey Winky. Checking out the Fraser Downs stuff from the other side of the planet. Always good to see horses from down our way (Australia) racing in Canada.
Can you tell me - who is your race caller? He is the best.
‘There they goooo….off and racing…’
The best.
